“It’s something I want to act upon in the House – it’s an important discussion.” – House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz, April 19th, 2018, talking to the State Capitol Press Corps about House Bill 5421, An Act Adopting the Interstate Compact To Elect the President Of The United States By National Popular Vote.
With just 19 days to go before the official end to the Connecticut General Assembly’s 2018 Session, House Bill 5421 continues to gather support among lawmakers – our Hartford lobbyists tell us that the bill now has an impressive 66 sponsors in the House (out of 79 House Democratic Caucus members). It is currently on the House “Go List” and awaiting action.
This magic number for approval is 76 votes, based on the 150 lawmakers who currently make up the Connecticut State House. House Speaker Aresimowicz, who supports the bill (see his above quote), told the press corps yesterday he wants to see it called for a vote sometime soon.
This means that people still need to make their voices heard to lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. Connecticut has never been in a better position to become the 11th state (plus the District of Columbia) to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact and allow its seven electoral votes to be awarded to the winner of the National Popular Vote. Let yourself be heard in these critical final three weeks!
Media Update: James Glassman’s Op-ed Picked Up Statewide
"Connecticut's legislature now has a chance to join 10 other states and the District of Columbia in passing a law that will eventually change the method of electing the president to the same way we elect them — by a popular vote. It is also how we elect the U.S. Congress, governors, mayors — every office but president. That must change."
-James K. Glassman
MEVC Board Member and former Ambassador James Glassman’s op-ed which ran in last week’s newsletter, “Why Every CT Voter Should Support the National Popular Vote,” has now been picked up and run in nine digital daily publications in Connecticut.
It also ran in the print edition of the New Haven Register on April 17th.
More MEVC Advertising in CT
MEVC has recently boosted its online ad campaign in Connecticut to include CT News Junkie, one of the most prominent and respected daily news sources covering the State Capitol. The ad (the same one which last week we reported is running on the Capitol Report news aggregation website) will run in constant rotation on the CT News Junkie site from now through the end of session, and it clicks through to this online petition asking people to support House Bill 5421.
